An absolute lower bound to the number of templates needed to maintain the fitting-factor above a given threshold in matched filter detection of GW chirps from coalescing binaries is derived. An explicit sampling-interpolating representation of the deflection in terms of the above minimum number of correlators is provided, and its statistical properties are discussed. Numerical experiments are presented to validate the proposed approach, confirming that the number of templates required is substantially less than previously estimated.
